There is a number of different ways in which people can be treated for social phobia and it is important that one finds a suitable treatment that will work for you and deals with your special needs. Feeling anxious in front of people is a normal reaction but people that suffer from social anxiety disorder have an adverse reaction and react unreasonable as they continuously think that they are being watched or judged and this type of fear interferes with their daily lives.
People suffering from social anxiety disorders find it very difficult to do common everyday things that we all take for granted in front of other people for instance they are unable to eat and drink in front of other people and they find it difficult to make new friends and in most instances avoid any social situations.
In addition they experience physical symptoms such as sweating, increased heart rate, blushing and trembling and find talking to people extremely difficult. These people no longer need to suffer and live with this debilitating condition for the rest of their lives as there are various treatment options available to them.
The first thing they need to do is seek professional help. By expressing their symptoms to a professional a suitable protocol can be devised for their specified needs. A qualified professional can prescribe medications such as antidepressants, anti anxiety drugs and beta blockers. They also have the option of consulting with a trained psychotherapist or counselor and if their condition is out of control maybe a psychiatrist who can help them change their thinking patterns and reactions to social situations that provoke their fears.
Family support is important and plays an essential role in the recovery and healing process of the subject with social anxiety disorder. Family support can make their situation easier to cope with when there is love and support to back them up. A social phobia treatment is designed to help people cope with their anxiety in social circumstances which in turn will allow them to live healthy and productive lives.
These Subjects experience problems in the work place and socially and seldom form any relationships and they end up isolated. In order to live a full life a human needs to interact as humans are social beings so one can only imagine the pain these people suffer on a daily basis when they have social phobia. Most humans have has the opportunity of being alone which in all due respect can be an unpleasant experience especially if you are ill. Social phobia therapy help these people overcome their anxiety which in turn will create a healthy bond with others.
These people will display common symptoms such as:
• Very shy and introvert
• The display anxiety when in public places
• Difficulty making new friends or encountering new social situation
• Experience discomfort eating and drinking in front of other people
• They find it unpleasant being the centre of attention
• Some cannot write or read in front of people
• They are afraid of being embarrassed or judged
• They try and behave as normal as possible so that others won’t notice they are nervous
This is a vicious cycles as they are well aware of their social phobia and the more encounters they have the more anxious they become which results in illnesses and can lead to dependencies such as drug and alcohol and in extreme cases suicide.
Besides conventional treatment such as cognitive therapy and medications there are other alternative therapies such as self help groups and these groups are available either on the internet or locally. These groups are great as they allow these subjects to share information which in itself is already forming social bonds with each other. Another alternative is hypnotherapy which deals with parts of the subconscious mind and the therapist can get to the root cause of the social phobia problem and in turn find the correct solution to help the person overcome their phobia.
One can also choose to participate in Neuro Linguistic Programming NLP which helps these people understand that one creates their own reality and has been helpful in many social phobia cases. One other therapy that I find to be fantastic as well as gentle is energy psychology which is bases on the principals of acupuncture and the patient can perform the treatment themselves at home.
