A person that suffers from social phobia always has the feeling that someone is watching or staring at them especially when they are in public places such as shopping malls; place of employment or just out on a walk. However they do realize that this is an irrational thought and in spite of being aware that they have a phobia they are unable to relax when confronted with their phobia.
They constantly think that people are judging or evaluating them in one way or another and they experience extreme discomfort due to feeling self consciousness when they are in the company of other people which inevitably results in an anxiety attack. These subjects live in a vicious and painful cycle and the only way they can deal with their situation is to try and avoid social situation and go into isolation.
They are caught up in a catch twenty two situation due to the fact that they are fully aware of their situation and at the same time do not want other people to know that they suffer from social phobia which only adds to their anxiety. They prefer to be alone even when it comes to their families and they constantly feel overwhelmed when they need to confront a situation. Their thoughts constantly revolve around negativity and they feel like they are been criticized and judged constantly.
In their place of employment they have a major issue with their superiors as well as people that hold high positions as they see these people as a threat. When a person with social phobia meets a stranger they immediately become anxious and tense up as well as focus on not giving themselves away that most of the time they do not recall what they said to the other person and when they assess the situation later they realize that they made a fool of themselves.
Any social confrontation such as a job interview is a living nightmare for these subjects as not only do they think that they won’t make the grade they keep relaying the thoughts that they won’t be able to answer the question correctly and the person interviewing them will think they are inadequate and that they may blush and yes they will end up saying the wrong things. They are well aware of the fact that are more than capable of doing the job but their stumbling block is getting past the intimidating and terrifying interview first.
Due to the fact that social phobia is not recognized and little is known or discussed about the disorder these people feel that they are the only ones in the entire world suffering from a social phobia. They seldom seek professional help as they do not want anyone to know that they are suffering from this disorder and they allow their condition to reap havoc in their lives which unfortunately just adds to their dilemma and their social phobia leads to either alcohol abuse or suicide.
